JWA Consulting is a Lean healthcare consulting firm. Their focus on Lean healthcare has helped clients achieve dramatic improvements in operational and clinical quality, costs, healthcare access, employee and patient safety, and physician/staff engagement.
Part of JWA’s mission is to teach our clients how to become a Lean thinking organization, so when we return in 10 years they are still implementing the same strategies and operational improvements.
All of the learners who will be participating in the training and learning in the class are adults. Andragogy, “makes the following assumptions about the design of learning: (1) Adults need to know why they need to learn something (2) Adults need to learn experientially, (3) Adults approach learning as problem-solving, and (4) Adults learn best when the topic is of immediate value” (Culatta 2015).
Since this class is taught in the classroom by an instructor, it offers the instructor the ability to adjust the learning for the students present in the class. None of the assessments are “graded” even the quiz is a self-evaluation. The instructor reviews the answers with the group, but the students are not required to share their test score. The rest of the activities are group discussions and activities. This is because we are trying to foster a team identity. It is also important that the participants connect manufacturing concepts and synthesize them for a hospital setting. Reflecting and discussing with an instructor is a key part of this learning.
The various assessments that will be utilized are as follows. I’ve also included the video that will be shown in class.
| Terminal Objective: Eliminate waste within the hospital system | ||
| Enabling Objectives | Assessment Idea | |
| Understand why we focus on the principle of Waste | Quiz: to check for understanding of the principles introduced in the PowerPoint | |
| Identify Waste as a non-value added activity | ||
| Identify the categories of Waste | ||
| Identify the types of Waste found in the hospital system | ||
| Reflect on how other organizations have removed waste and improved production | Group discussion: on the way they saw Waste eliminated in the video | |
| Terminal Objective: Develop Standardized Work for the Hospital systems | ||
| Enabling Objectives | Assessment Idea | |
| Define Standardized Work | Class discussion | |
| Understand the importance of Standardized Work | ||
| Determine the best way of distributing SW to people on the clinic or floor | Reflect on in-class group scenario:
In small groups, students construct the Lego racecars from the racecar simulation as a team. Participants will be asked to complete the provided lego kits, but each group will have different types of instructions. Ie: all text, final picture only, step-by-step. |
|
| Analyze current work being done by different providers in the clinics or on the floors | Group Activity & Discussion:
Complete checklist of standard work for one member of the group utilizing the job breakdown sheets |
|
Assessment Example:
Enabling Objective: Reflect on how other organizations have removed waste and improved production.
Assessment: Group discussion: on the way they saw Waste eliminated in the “Meals per Hour” video
Group Discussion Questions for Facilitators:
- What type of Waste did you see removed from the process?
- What changes did you see to the process?
- How can this apply to healthcare?
